French, Napoleon III Period, attributed to Louis-Constant Sévin (1821-1888), Vase with Crocodiles and Serpents

Sale price18.000 EUR

'Renaissance' vase Paris, around 1847 Jules, Constant, Jean, Baptiste Peyre - Jules Peyre (1811 - 1871)

A testament to the evolution of taste, from the splendour of the late Ancien Régime to the triumphant eclecticism of the Second Empire, this vase is a perfect example of the stylistic revival that characterised French decorative arts during the reign of Louis-Philippe, with the emergence of a new generation of ornamental artists led by Claude-Aimé Chenavard.

The design of this vase was created by the sculptor and ornamental artist Jules Peyre and is illustrated as such in his collection Orfèvrerie. Nielle. Bijoux, armoiries et divers objets d'art (Goldsmithing, Niello, Jewellery, Coats of Arms and Various Works of Art).

Trained in the workshop of the renowned animal sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye, Peyre regularly exhibited at the Salon from 1840 onwards and later succeeded Chenavard as artistic director of the Sèvres manufactory.
